«Dear friends, we are experiencing this difficult moment not only for our city, but for all of Italy and for the whole world. Tonight we want to invoke Archangel Michael, who in the old testament was the guide and defender of the people of God, as our fathers who always found his help did in the past, in the various moments of trial, of natural disaster. His intercession brought in the plague of 1656 a prodigious salvation for Monte Sant’Angelo: today we invoke through his intercession the Lord to save not only our city, but the whole Gargano, all Italy, all the world, from this epidemic ».

With these words P. Ladislao Suchy started a touching, profound, prayerful, spiritual celebration. Certainly exceptional, as exceptional – and dramatic – is the moment that the whole world is experiencing due to the Covid 19 pandemic.

Exceptional because on the afternoon of 5 April 2020 the sword of the Archangel was taken, a sword that is extracted only on the occasion of the patronal feast of 29 September.

Exceptional because on this very special Palm Sunday thousands of faithful joined in prayer streaming live from all over the globe (also creating a temporary suspension of the portal due to excessive overload!).

Exceptional because the power of the images, the ray of sunshine on the religious, the surrounding silence interrupted only by the wind and the tolling of the bells of the Angevin tower, gave “voice” to the Blessed Sacrament and to the symbols of the crucifixion and the Heavenly Prince, solemnly brought outside the Basilica, to which everyone was able to make his own plea.

On behalf of the people of God and representing the city, the rector of the sanctuary and the mayor proclaimed two prayers of supplication and intercession.
