An extraordinary event took place on the afternoon of September 25th in the Basilica’s Upper Atrium: Miwa Komatsu created a painting before a large and attentive audience.
The Japanese artist’s live painting performance marks the third stage of an international project linking Mont-Saint-Michel, the Sacra di San Michele, and Monte Sant’Angelo; it is not merely a creative act, but an act of prayer. What emerges on the canvas is born of listening to and connecting with the site and its spiritual dimension.
The two canvases—painted in the span of an hour—are dedicated to the Archangel, his victory over Satan, and the Grotto’s context of faith and worship; they will be donated to the Basilica, thereby enriching its precious artistic heritage.
The sight of the forecourt was striking; it became the setting for a process perfectly in tune with the centuries-old tradition of pilgrimage and devotion that has shaped the history of this sacred site in the Gargano region.
