Holy Thursday marks the end of Lent and the beginning of the Easter Triduum.
At the Last Supper, Jesus chose to celebrate the Jewish Passover with the Apostles, a feast commemorating Israel’s liberation from slavery in Egypt. During the banquet, the Lord instituted the true sacrament of salvation, the Eucharist, and at the same time the priestly ministry.
Then, “having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end,” he rose from the table, laid aside his garments, took a towel, poured water into a basin, and began to wash his disciples’ feet. The washing of the feet is the great lesson he entrusted to all his disciples, so that they might follow him on the path of generosity and service to their brothers and sisters.
