Saint Augustine called it “the mother of all holy vigils”: during the solemn Easter Vigil, the Church celebrates the Resurrection of Christ.
It is a liturgy composed of various moments: the blessing of the fire and the lucernarium, with the lighting of the candle and the singing of the “Exultet,” highlight the contrast and transition from darkness to light, from death to life; the proclamation of the Word of God (seven readings, eight psalms, and the Epistle of Saint Paul) represents a kind of biblical catechesis that highlights how the Almighty has acted throughout history for the salvation of his creatures; the rite of Baptism (where it is provided) is an opportunity to renew one’s Christian identity, renouncing sin and embracing Christ; the Eucharist makes the Resurrection sacramentally present; it is the banquet of the risen, a foretaste of eternal bliss.
The vigil will begin at 10:00 PM.
